JB is a Venture Partner at Basis Set, where he backs founders at the intersection of biology and AI. He brings the perspective of a scientist, operator, and serial entrepreneur, with multiple exits and a career that spans academia, big tech, AI, drug discovery and synthetic biology.
Most recently, JB co-founded Patch Biosciences, an a16z-backed AIxBio company acquired by Ginkgo Bioworks. Patch Bio engineered synthetic regulatory elements to improve genetic medicines, based on a platform of in vivo data generation (MPRA) and deep learning. Prior to that, JB held senior leadership roles at BenevolentAI, a key player in the first wave of "AI for pharma"; spent time at Palantir following the acquisition of his second startup; and was a visiting faculty at Google.
JB holds a PhD in Systems Biology and an MS in Applied Mathematics from Harvard, and a BS in Mathematics/CS and MS in Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique. His work has been published in Nature and in Science. He was a co-creator of the Google Ngram Viewer, a telescope for human culture. He is a TED Fellow, a Forbes 30 Under 30, holds a honorary PhD from Claremont Graduate University for contributions to Data Science, and his art is part of the permanent collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He lives in New York, and is often found somewhere in Europe with his family.
